What Are the Best Free Online Courses With Certificates?

Compare credible online learning providers, free course access, certificate fees, digital badges and ways to choose career-relevant courses.

The best free online course is one that teaches a useful skill, has credible learning content and gives you a practical way to demonstrate what you learned. One important distinction: free course access does not always mean a free certificate. Some platforms let learners audit videos and readings at no cost but charge for graded assessments or verified credentials. Always check the course enrolment page and certificate terms before starting.

1. Separate free learning from free certification

A course may be free to study while its certificate costs money. edX explains that its free audit track generally excludes graded assignments and certificates. Alison allows free study and provides a learner record, while certificates may be optional purchases; selected courses may have free digital certificates. The British Council offers free online courses with optional paid certificates. Read the provider’s current terms because offers change.

2. Choose platforms by learning goal

For foundational school and university subjects, Khan Academy is strong for structured practice. For computing and programming, explore freeCodeCamp and Harvard’s CS50 materials. For university-style lectures, MIT OpenCourseWare provides open course materials, although it does not generally award a completion certificate for simply viewing materials. For workplace skills, explore Google Skillshop, HubSpot Academy, IBM SkillsBuild and Microsoft Learn, checking the credential attached to each specific learning path.

3. Check the value and recognition of a certificate

A completion certificate usually confirms participation or successful completion of a course; it is not automatically an academic qualification, professional licence or accredited diploma. Before enrolling, identify the issuing organisation, assessment method, learning hours, verification link and whether employers in your target field recognise it. For regulated professions such as teaching, nursing or engineering, short online courses do not replace statutory registration or required qualifications.

4. Select courses that match a clear objective

Write down the skill you want to gain and the task you should be able to perform afterwards. For example, a spreadsheet course should help you create formulas and analyse data; a digital marketing course should include campaign planning and measurement; a teacher-development course should improve lesson design, assessment or inclusive practice. Prefer courses with practical assignments, updated content and transparent outcomes.

5. Build a portfolio, not just a certificate collection

Save project files, lesson plans, code samples, presentations or case studies that demonstrate your competence. Add the course name, provider, completion date and a short description to your CV or professional profile. Share only work you are permitted to publish and never exaggerate the level of certification.

6. Avoid misleading “free certificate” adverts

Be cautious when a website hides fees until the final step, promises internationally recognised accreditation without evidence or asks for payment to guarantee employment. Navigate directly to the provider’s official domain, review refund and privacy terms, and verify any accreditation claim with the relevant accrediting body.

International standards: expanded guidance

Know the difference between free learning and a free certificate

Course access, graded assignments and certification may have separate prices. edX’s free audit track generally provides temporary access to learning materials but not a verified certificate. Alison allows free study and offers a learner record, while certificates may be optional paid products; selected courses have free digital certificates. The British Council offers free online courses with optional paid certificates on some programmes.

Choose providers by the skill you want

For school subjects and foundational mathematics or science, explore Khan Academy. For computing, explore Harvard CS50 and freeCodeCamp. For professional digital skills, investigate Google Skillshop, Microsoft Learn, IBM SkillsBuild and HubSpot Academy. For university-style open materials, explore MIT OpenCourseWare and edX. Check each course’s current assessment and certificate terms.

Check credential quality before enrolling

Verify the issuing organisation, learning outcomes, assessment method, certificate verification link and whether the credential is recognised by employers or your professional regulator. A completion certificate is not automatically a degree, academic credit or professional licence. Regulated professions require the relevant formal qualification and registration.

Turn learning into evidence

Complete practical projects, save your work and describe the skills you can demonstrate. Add course name, provider, date and credential type to your CV. Avoid collecting certificates without practising the skill, and do not pay a third party who promises guaranteed employment or accreditation.
